I have a question and I would like to here your thoughts..
I have always heard of mixed ancestry in my family, but never paid it much attetnion. As i got older i became more curious about it. So I began talking to family members and doing research and found out quite a bit. I also found out do to the shame & very painful history, that my grandparents on both sides didnt want to reveal these parts of they re families. Not to mention that the areas where both sides of my family are from are close and there could be some possible realtion but thats another story..lol
My Father which i have known is cherokee indian and black
My mother is scottish, creek(euchee) and black. My mother is very light skin and father dark Both families lived along the savanah river, father's side was south carolina and my mother's side was northern gerogia
Whenever there is discussion about race I talk about this heritage to other blacks and i get the "oh please we all mixed wit something", or "you just don't wanna be black". I'm am proudly and clearly a brown skin women. But i know if I were talking about this same heritage and my skin turned out to looked more like my mother's or grandmother's(fair) i wouldnt be hearing the same comments, and feel the need to defend myself.I call myself black and not mixed andI am proud to be black but knowing that their is more to me than meets the eye is exciting and intresting and that now gives me something to teach my children(HERITAGE). Its nice to know where you come from. I guess all in all i should just be proud of what I know but for some reason it really gets to me that some people are still so ignorant and think that if your family is mixed then you should have turned our different looking..
